High Wattage - Diamond, Amyx
DJ Syrena Apr 10 2007 - 2:39am
Two women I have to mention, so completely different from each other, yet both so dynamically inspiring to me in the way of their enthusiasm and insanely high spirit, are Diamond and Amyx. I spun with Diamond for the 1st time at the KARMA Magazine party to celebrate the Hollywood release of its Spring issue that featured us together in an interview and photo shoot along with breakbeat dynamo, Reid Speed. All I had known of Diamond prior to the shoot was that she was that she had appeared in the female DJ Playboy spread. I never did see it, so I had no idea what to expect when I arrived at the set, Mark Lewis’ A&R Select offices. As I pushed through the double glass doors, I saw a vibrant, southern California blonde sitting in the makeup artist’s chair, wearing the friendliest smile. She immediately introduced herself to me, with a heartfelt handshake, instantly setting me at ease. One of sweetest people I’ve met on the club circuit. Confident, and without a trace of makeup. Come showtime, I was impressed by the show(o)manship of her skills. Every hand motion across the turntablles was fluid and it was clear she enjoyed every bit of her job. Energy wattage shone bright and I could see why her name is Diamond. One of my friends, Japheal, wanted me to meet his friend, DJ Amyx. She spins every Friday in the Backlounge at Blowfish. So the next night, I made my way over to the swank Beverly Hills sushi joint on Sunset. The moment I walked up to the DJ booth and introduced myself, Amyx greeted me with the warmest welcome and a huge hug. She was getting down with her mixes, fancy footwork combined with channel fader maneuvers and true joy in every move. Amyx has perfected the art of blending underground beats with glossy hip hop sounds, while maintaining musical integrity with an excited, gritty style. This woman is at home behind the decks, and it was a treat to meet her and perform with her. I’ll be back on April 20, so come by and check it! I can’t wait to see Reid this Wednesday night at The Vanguard as she hosts “Breakdown” with extra yummy guest Dj/Producer Lee Coombs! Definitely return for the full report. As many of us know, Reid drops some serious skills and takes no prisoners, with her kick-ass attitude. |
